There are two primary ways to get natural gas supply in Ohio: through the standard rate set by regulators, or by shopping around and choosing your own gas supplier.
SCO is the default natural gas supply rate set by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) through a competitive auction. If you don’t actively choose a supplier, you are automatically enrolled in SCO when you start service.
When you choose a certified retail supplier through Ohio’s Gas Choice program, National Fuel will still deliver your gas, read your meter and respond to safety concerns. You can compare natural gas suppliers using the PUCO Apples to Apples comparison tool.
The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) oversees our regulated utility services and approves Ohio tariffs.
The Ohio Consumers’ Counsel serves as a consumer advocate that works to protect your rights in consumer and regulatory matters. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regulates interstate natural gas pipelines and electric transmission lines.
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is responsible for ensuring that the safe operating practices contained in the Federal Pipeline Safety Act are followed.

SCO is the default price for natural gas supply if you don’t actively choose a retail supplier. The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio approves this rate through a competitive bidding auction, where natural gas suppliers compete to offer the best rate. The SCO rate can change periodically based on market conditions.
Yes. Under the Ohio Gas Choice program, you have the right to shop for and choose a certified retail natural gas supplier that may offer different rates, contract terms and additional services. National Fuel will continue to deliver your gas through our pipelines, read your meter and respond to gas safety emergencies. There is no interruption to your service when you switch, and your bill will still come from National Fuel with both supply and delivery charges itemized.
If your supplier goes out of business or stops servicing your area, you will automatically be transferred to the Standard Choice Offer (SCO) to help avoid a lapse in service.
