How Natural Gas Vehicles Work

Natural gas vehicles (NGVs) can reduce fuel costs significantly versus diesel- or gasoline-powered vehicles, extend engine life and reduce the frequency of oil changes.

So how do they work?

  1. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) enters the vehicle through the natural gas fuel receptacle.
  2. The CNG flows into high-pressure storage cylinders.
  3. When natural gas is required by the engine, CNG leaves the cylinders and passes through the cylinder valve.
  4. The gas goes through the high-pressure fuel line and enters the engine compartment.
  5. Gas enters the regulator, which reduces pressure from up to 3,600 psi to the pressure required to open the fuel injectors.
  6. The solenoid valve allows natural gas to pass from the regulator into the fuel injectors. (The solenoid valve will also shut off the natural gas when the engine is not running.)
  7. Natural gas mixes with air, then flows down through the fuel injection system and enters the engine’s combustion chambers.
